Steamboat Springs is a ranching town with a ski mountain attached, and much of the high country around it is the Routt National Forest. That makes it easy country for a small ceremony: a waterfall a few minutes from Lincoln Avenue, wildflower meadows on Rabbit Ears Pass, a lake under Hahns Peak, or a lawn at the top of the gondola if you want a venue with a catering team. The paperwork is simple. The decisions are mostly about season and how many people you are bringing.
Your marriage license from Routt County
Steamboat Springs is the Routt County seat, so the clerk’s office is right in town. You can use a license from any Colorado county, so if you land in Denver and it is easier to stop there, that works too. Our Colorado marriage license guide compares the options.
If you want the Routt County license, here is what the clerk’s page says:
- Appointments only. Call (970) 870-5556 to book. Licenses are issued from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays.
- Apply online first. Both of you complete one online application, and you bring the transaction number to the appointment. Parents’ full names (including your mother’s maiden name) and exact divorce details, if any, are required fields.
- Fee: $30, by cash, check or card (cards carry a transaction fee). Certified copies are $1.25 each.
- ID: a passport, an original or certified birth certificate, a U.S. driver’s license or a U.S. military ID. Driver’s licenses marked “Not valid for federal identification” are not accepted.
- Keep it small. The office asks that only the two of you come to the appointment; children are fine.
The license is valid for 35 days anywhere in Colorado and goes back to Routt County within 63 days of the ceremony. You need no witnesses, and the two of you can solemnize your own marriage; see self solemnization.
Routt National Forest rules
The Routt is managed as part of the Medicine Bow Routt National Forests, and the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District covers the country around Steamboat. Its office is at 925 Weiss Drive in Steamboat Springs, (970) 870-2299; the forest asks you to call ahead for front desk hours.
The forest’s permit page says a special use permit is required for outfitters and guides, commercial events, events with groups over 75 people, and commercial filming or photography. A couple, a photographer and a few guests at a trailhead are well under the group line, which matches our national forest and BLM guide. Two things are worth a call to the district: any plan that approaches 75 people or involves setting up chairs and an arch, and how your photographer handles the commercial photography rule. Ask the photographer before you book them.
Where couples elope
| Site | Who manages it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fish Creek Falls | Routt National Forest | About 3 miles from downtown; day use fee per vehicle |
| Rabbit Ears Pass | Routt National Forest along US 40 | Summer meadows beside a busy highway |
| Steamboat Lake | Colorado Parks and Wildlife | Hahns Peak backdrop; park pass required |
| Thunderhead Lawn and Vista Overlook | Steamboat Resort | Reached by the Steamboat Gondola |
| Strawberry Park Hot Springs | Private | No published ceremony policy; ask first |
Fish Creek Falls is the classic Steamboat backdrop: a tall waterfall in a forested canyon, a short walk from the parking area on Fish Creek Falls Road. It is also one of the busiest trailheads in the area, so plan a weekday or an early morning, and check the current day use fee at the pay station.
Rabbit Ears Pass carries US 40 over the Park Range east of town. In summer the broad meadows on either side fill with wildflowers, and the pass takes its name from the twin rock formation on Rabbit Ears Peak. Because it is a highway pass, pull offs are plentiful but traffic is constant, so walk a little way from the road.
Steamboat Lake State Park is about 25 miles north of town on County Road 129. The reservoir sits at about 8,000 feet with Hahns Peak behind it. State parks run weddings through their own process, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife says a Special Activity Agreement or photography permit may be required, so contact the park before you set a date. Our state parks guide explains the agreement, and every vehicle needs a valid park pass.
Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a favorite place to soak after the ceremony, but it does not publish a ceremony policy. Entry runs on timed reservations, and it offers no group discounts, so ask the springs directly before planning anything more than a soak.
Steamboat Resort venues
If you want a reserved site with food, drinks and a team handling setup, Steamboat Resort runs a wedding program with about a dozen venues. Three are ceremony sites:
- Thunderhead Lawn, a manicured lawn at the top of the Steamboat Gondola with long views.
- Vista Overlook, a smaller site looking out over the valley toward the Flat Tops.
- Grand Pavilion, an outdoor site with covered seating.
For a reception, the Champagne Powder Room in Thunderhead Lodge sits at 9,080 feet at the top of the gondola, Hazie’s in the same lodge suits a smaller group, and Four Points Lodge sits higher at 9,716 feet. The resort also has spaces at the base and at the Steamboat Grand. Pricing and dates come through the resort’s wedding team, so request information early if you want a summer Saturday. The resort is the obvious answer to searches for Steamboat wedding venues, but for an elopement of two to ten people, a forest site plus a dinner reservation in town often fits better.
Seasons
Summer is the main ceremony season for outdoor sites and the gondola lawn. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Colorado mountains, so plan a morning or early evening ceremony and give yourself a covered backup.
Fall brings the aspens to the slopes around town and on the drive up to Steamboat Lake. Timing moves each year; our fall elopement guide covers when to commit to a date.
Winter is long and snowy in Steamboat. Forest roads and trailheads become snowshoe or ski access, and US 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass can see winter driving conditions. Read our winter elopement guide before you choose a January date, and ask the resort which venues it runs in snow season.
Plan it
We do not have Steamboat based vendors listed yet. Any we add will appear in the local vendors grid below this guide, and until then many photographers and officiants in our statewide directory travel to the Yampa Valley. The Northern Colorado guide covers the rest of the region, and our Colorado elopement cost guide helps you budget for travel days. Save your dates, permits and vendor shortlist in the free planner.
