Grand Lake and the quiet side

Two Rocky Mountain National Park ceremony sites, a lakeside town with rentable parks, and national forest shoreline, all on the side of the Divide most visitors never reach. Here is how the permits, the Grand County license and the seasonal roads fit together.

Grand Lake is the town at the west entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, on the shore of what the Forest Service calls the largest natural lake in Colorado. Most park visitors stay on the Estes Park side. The Park Service rates the two west side wedding sites as moderate and light visitation, against heavy at Sprague Lake and Lily Lake. If you want the park without the crowds, this is where to look.

Three agencies matter here: the Park Service inside the park, the Town of Grand Lake for its parks, and the Forest Service for the Arapaho National Recreation Area around Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Lake Granby. Each has its own rules.

The two park ceremony sites on the west side

Both need the same $300 special use permit as every other site in the park, applied for one year ahead of your wedding month. Our RMNP wedding permit guide walks through the application, and the RMNP wedding sites comparison lines up all thirteen sites.

Harbison Meadows

A picnic area with a pavilion and open meadow looking down the Kawuneeche Valley toward the Gore Range. The surrounding forest burned in the 2020 East Troublesome Fire, so expect standing burned trees outside the meadow. You cannot occupy the picnic sites for the ceremony itself. Harbison Meadow is one of the areas the park closes to off trail foot travel from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. daily, September 1 through October 31, for the elk rut, so plan a fall ceremony with that in mind.

Timber Creek Campground Amphitheater

The only campground on the west side, along the Colorado River at 8,900 feet. Parking is limited and the gate is locked whenever the campground is closed. In 2026 it opened May 21 and closed at noon on October 5, so check the park’s camping page for your year’s dates.

These are two of only three park sites where leashed dogs can attend, which makes the west side a good fit if your dog is in the wedding party. See eloping with kids and dogs.

From late May to mid October, the park requires a timed entry reservation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., west side included. Your signed wedding permit counts as that reservation.

Getting here: Trail Ridge Road and US 40

Trail Ridge Road links Estes Park and Grand Lake across 48 miles of the park, but the Park Service closes it to through travel from about mid October to late May. In those months the east and west sides are separate trips, so an Estes Park hotel and a Grand Lake ceremony do not mix.

The year round route from Denver is Interstate 70 west to the Empire exit, US 40 over Berthoud Pass to Granby, then US 34 to Grand Lake. The Park Service lists that leg as 61 miles and 1.5 to 2 hours from the interstate, and warns that US 40 can close or carry restrictions in winter. Counting the drive out of Denver, plan on very roughly two and a half to three hours in good conditions, and more when it snows. When Colorado’s traction law is active, the park requires proper tires or chains on every vehicle.

Town of Grand Lake spaces

The town rents the Community House, the upper and lower Lakefront Park, Heckert Pavilion and the Town Park Gazebo through its online reservation system, which lists current prices. The rental rules worth knowing:

Point Park sits on the channel between Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Reservoir, with a mostly paved quarter mile loop, a pier facing Mount Craig, and restrooms at the trailhead. The town itself suggests it for wedding ceremonies. It is Forest Service land, the town no longer takes private reservations, and use is first come, first served with limited parking.

Arapaho National Recreation Area

The Forest Service land around Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Lake Granby and Monarch Lake is the Arapaho National Recreation Area. Normally the forest requires a permit only at 75 or more people, for commercial events, or for props. The recreation area is congressionally designated, though, and the forest says ceremonies there may need a permit, so contact the Sulphur Ranger District before you plan one. Vehicles at fee areas, including Shadow Mountain Reservoir, need a pass: $5 for a day, $10 for three days, $15 for seven, or an interagency pass. Day use runs from sun up to sun down. Our national forest elopement guide covers the wider rules.

Your Grand County marriage license

A Colorado license from any county works anywhere in the state, but the closest clerk is Grand County at 308 Byers Avenue in Hot Sulphur Springs. The fee is $30. Call 970-725-3064 at least 24 hours ahead for an appointment, since the office cannot take same day appointments, and complete the online application. Both of you bring valid government photo ID. The license is valid for 35 days, and the completed certificate goes back to the clerk within 63 days. Our Colorado marriage license guide covers the state rules.

Winter on the west side

With Trail Ridge closed, Harbison Meadows is the park site that stays reachable, with a plowed lot and the meadow under snow. From November 15 to March 15 the park and Forest Service close parts of the East Shore Trail, the Colorado River corridor and Columbine Bay for wintering bald eagles. Read our winter elopement guide before you book.

Common questions

Can you get married at Grand Lake without a permit?

It depends whose land you are on. The town requires a Special Event Permit only for events open to the public, and Point Park cannot be reserved at all. Inside the park, every ceremony needs the $300 permit. In the recreation area, ask the Forest Service.

Is Grand Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park?

No. The town sits just outside the west entrance. Harbison Meadows is 0.7 miles inside it.

Can you drive from Estes Park to Grand Lake in winter?

Not through the park. Trail Ridge Road closes from about mid October to late May, so you go around by highway.

Where do you get a marriage license near Grand Lake?

The Grand County Clerk and Recorder in Hot Sulphur Springs, by appointment.

Vendors and next steps
