Crested Butte is a small town at the end of the road in the Elk Mountains, and the wedding venues here reflect that. There are no hotel ballrooms on this list. You choose between a wildflower garden above town, an arts center on Sixth Street, conserved land in the aspens, or a ranch down valley along the Taylor River or near Gunnison, where guests can sleep on the property and the party can run all weekend.
Most couples split the day the way locals do. The ceremony happens outdoors, often at a reserved site like the Crested Butte Land Trust spots at Woods Walk and Peanut Lake, or on national forest land on Kebler Pass or toward Gothic, and dinner happens somewhere with a roof. Our Crested Butte elopement guide explains the forest rules, the Land Trust booking terms and which roads are open in which months.
Distance matters more here than in a Front Range town. Gunnison is roughly 30 miles south on Highway 135, Almont sits between the two where the Taylor and East rivers meet, and Waunita Hot Springs Ranch is east of Gunnison toward Tomichi Dome. The regional airport is in Gunnison, so out of town guests often land there and drive north. Build the timeline around those drives and around the afternoon storms that roll over the Elk Mountains most summer days.
The season is short and specific. Wildflowers generally peak from mid July through early August, the aspens on Kebler Pass are usually best in late September, and winter closes Kebler Pass and Gothic Road beyond the pavement to cars. Plan on booking a year or more ahead for July and September Saturdays. One note for planners: the Mountain Wedding Garden has announced it is closed for the 2027 season and will take 2028 bookings from June 2027. Your marriage license comes from the Gunnison County Clerk in Gunnison by appointment, or from any other Colorado county.
